Do-it-yourself Bench Restoration Kits

wood carving

Do you have an old bench in your garden that is falling down? While the wooden slats may be rotting away, the cast-iron bench ends will last forever. With one of our DIY kits, you can restore your own bench to its former glory.

Our kits come with everything you need, including a simple assembly guide. We offer both complete kits consisting of wooden slats, braces, bolts and screws, or smaller kits consisting of the hardwood slats only.

Our standard bench kit will fit most bench ends, but we can also produce non-standard kits, tailored to your exact requirements.

The timber is iroko and is planed, rounded and pre-drilled. It can also be treated with either teak oil or primed if needed. Iroko is often referred to as African teak since it shares many of the properties of teak, as well as the coloration. It is a very durable oily hardwood, ideally suited to our climate where it is used extensively when a long-lasting hardwood is required.

Standard Bench Kit: Contents

  • Assembly guide
  • 12 hardwood slats
  • 1 centre strap
  • 2 pre-bent and drilled angle braces
  • 26 bolts, nuts and washers
  • 14 screws

The Slats

Our standard kit comprises 12 hardwood slats. We provide several ratios of wide-to-thin slats that between them fit most bench ends. All slats come fully rounded on the long edges and are pre-drilled with holes centred, offset 18mm from the end of the slat.

Wide slats are 1.2m long x 55mm x 22mm and narrow slats are 1.2m long x 35mm x 22mm. Please check the hole centres on own your bench end to see which one you need.

Common ratios:
  • 8 wide x 4 narrow
  • 9 wide x 3 narrow
  • 10 wide x 2 narrow

For non-standard items, slats can be made to order. Simply request a quote from us.

The Straps, Bolts and Braces

Included in our assembly kit are all the straps, bolts and braces needed to restore your bench. The supplied 2 angle braces are pre-bent and drilled.

Please note: due to the various types of benches, and for shipping convenience, the centre strap is sent flat and undrilled. It requires bending and drilling by yourself.

You also get a set of 26 M6 x 40mm BZP bolts, nuts and washers, and a set of 14 A20 x 20mm stainless screws.

End-Fix Slats

It is rare, but some benches may require end-fixed slats rather than our standard slats. We supply these fitted with pre-filled insert nuts with hex bolts. They come in packs of 12, 1.2m long x 55mm x 22mm. If your bench ends need end-fix slats, you can order them here.

  1. What is included with the kits?
The full bench, table and chair kits comprise everything you need to restore your cast iron ends. Included is a set of wooden slats, braces, strap, bolts, nuts, washers and screws.
  2. Can I buy just the wooden slats?
Yes, we also sell just replacement slats.
  3. Do I need the strap and braces?
Yes you do in order to properly restore your item. If you have salvaged them from the old bench that's fine, but otherwise you will need to replace them. The centre strap unites all the slats together and the braces stop lateral sway (the slop syndrome).
  4. Can I buy the slats with just the bolts/just the braces/just the strap, but not the full kit?
Yes, you can order whatever kit parts you need. Just select the slats only when you order. You will have the option to add on whatever extras you need when ordering.
  5. Can you supply loose replacement slats?
Yes, we can. These are supplied undrilled in case your centres don't match the supplied kit. We recommend you check the length as sometimes it can be 1220mm. These are supplied at no extra cost.
  6. What size are the slats?
The standard slats are 1200mm long x 22mm thick and come in 2 widths: 35mm and 55m/m.
  7. What ratio of wide to narrow slats do you offer?
We can provide several combinations of slat types to match your own bench ends. Our bench and chair kits can come with 8 wide and 4 narrow slats, 9 wide and 3 narrow slats, or 10 wide with 2 narrow.
  8. Will your slats fit my bench?
Our standard slat sizes fit most items. If you have read the description and are still unsure, email us a photo and we can advise you as to what you need.
  9. Can I varnish or use a saddolins type of colour/stain?
We do not recommend either of these treatments unless you adore flaky wood and love maintenance.
  10. Do the slats come treated?
The slats are all iroko wood and can be supplied untreated, teak oiled or painted with aluminium primer.
  11. Do you provide assembly instructions?
Yes, a simple guide to restoring your bench is included with your pack. You can also download it here: bench assembly guide.
  12. How long will my order take to arrive?
Dispatch is normally within 1 working day for stock items, or 2-3 working days for specials.
  13. Can I collect from you?
Yes, by prior arrangement only. Our location is shown on our home page.
  14. Can you deliver outside the UK?
We will deliver outside the UK, but due to the weight of most of our products it can be very expensive.
  15. What are your postage costs?
